Proposed bill would create a new federal agency to protect consumer data

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) reintroduced a new version of her bill, the Data Protection Act of 2021. The bill would create a new, executive-level government agency, Data Protection Agency. The agency would have the authority and resources to enforce any data protection rules created by Congress or the agency itself, backed by a range of enforcement tools, including civil penalties, injunctive relief, and equitable remedies. Despite its role as an independent agency in the executive branch of the government, the agency won’t preempt state laws.”]
