Piracy Concerns are Thorn in Sino-U.S. Relations

U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez will meet with senior Chinese government officials Tuesday. He is on a two-day visit to Beijing focused largely on protecting intellectual property (IP) rights in China. IP protection has been a perennial source of friction between the United States and China. China has the third-highest rate of software piracy in the world, according to the Business Software Alliance (BSA), a software industry group formed to fight piracy. The Motion Picture Association, which represents major Hollywood movie studios, estimated Chinese movie piracy totaled US$2.7 billion in 2005.”]
