Researchers from security firm Check Point noticed a 233% increase in phishing scams promoting e-commerce related phishing sites. Phishers also use emails to lure consumers to fake retail sites in order to steal their money or sell cheap knockoffs. Fake lookalike sites were found that attempt to impersonate legitimate online retail sites, but offer significant discounts. Check Point offers the following suggestions: If a deal is too good to be true, then it probably is a bait-and-switch or some sort of scam. Instead of clicking on links sent in emails, find a brand’s legitimate web site and browse the deals directly on their site.
