The 16 controversial provisions of the U.S. Patriot Act were originally assigned an expiration date after 9/11. The provisions were made with the idea that after four years Congress would either have to renew them or theyd no longer be effective. At the end of 2005, when the provisions were near expiration, a number of Senators refused renewal until greater safeguards were added. In response, Congress passed the first extension, ending Feb. 3. Yesterday, Representatives from the House stood pat in support of the Bush Administrations position not to add additional safeguards.”]
