Multiple groups want extension on NIDS Bill

The Jamaica Observer published an article on November 6, 2020 about the extension of NIDS Bill deadline. Here’s a summary:

  • The National Identification System (NIDS) is expected to be tabled in Parliament, five advocacy groups have made a call for the deadline to be extended.
  • While the resumption of public discourse on the legislation is welcomed, many factors are concerning.
  • The present timeline for the tabling, public consultation, revision, debate, and passage of the NIDS Bill is thought to be insufficient. Since the law is likely to profoundly affect Jamaicans, understanding the concepts in the bills and sufficient times to prepare submissions should be provided.
  • There is also the belief that the NIDS Bill should be passed after the operationalization of the Data Protection Act which has not been brought into force yet. Because NIDS will collect unprecedented amounts of personal data, a data protection infrastructure is crucial prior to the parliamentary consideration of NIDS.
