Nation state-sponsored hacking groups operating from Russia, China, and Iran are targeting organizations and individuals involved in this year’s U.S. presidential election. Microsoft also mentioned unsuccessful attacks on people associated with the Trump and Biden campaigns. Their efforts are focused on stealing the targets’ credentials and to harvest intelligence to be used as part of future attacks. Microsoft has notified those who were targeted or compromised so they can take action to protect themselves. Microsoft’s report confirms intelligence shared by the U.S. government during July and August on Russian, Iranian, and Chinese hackers trying to “compromise the private communications of U.”
