Microsoft Purchasing GitHub for 7.5 Billion in Microsoft Stock

Microsoft announced this morning that they are purchasing GitHub for $7.5 billion USD in Microsoft stock. The purchase still needs to go through regulatory review and the normal closing process. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said the deal will strengthen the company’s commitment to developer freedom, openness and innovation. GitHub’s current CEO Chris Wanstrath will become a Microsoft technical fellow and work on other software initiatives. The news of this acquisition has already caused a huge uptick in projects being imported into Gitlab, a similar service to GitHub.
