The Organization of American States published a post on January 15, 2015 about the OAS co-hosting the launch of Jamaica’s National Cyber Security Strategy. Here’s a quick summary just for you.
Since February 2014, the OAS Cyber Security Program has been working with the Ministry of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining (STEM) of Jamaica, to develop the Government’s National Cyber Security Strategy. The development process was supported by the organization of a National cyber security Task Force consisting of a multi-stakeholder group of public and private sector stakeholders.

- Phillip Paulwell, minister of STEM, Jamaica, expressed his appreciation for the technical support of the Cyber Security Program for the implementation of the National Cyber Security Strategy. “I believe that we both – the private sector and the public sector – must be vigilant in seeking solutions if we are to be free from the spread of cyber crimes.” he stated.
- The Minister of State of the Ministry of STEM of Jamaica, Julian Robinson, who has had a leadership role in this initiative, emphasized the significance of this initiative, saying, “You are as vulnerable as your weakest link, and no country is resistant to cyberattacks.”
- Several representatives and ambassadors of state organizations in attendance expressed the importance and their appreciation for the initiative. Those on the list include the Commissioner of Police of Jamaica, Carl Williams, the British High Commissioner to Jamaica, David Fitton, the Canadian High Commissioner in Jamaica, Robert Ready, and The United States Ambassador to Jamaica, Luis G. Moreno.
- This initiative was supported by monetary donations from the Governments of Canada, the United States of America, and the United Kingdom, whose representatives took part in the ceremony.
- In addition to its recent engagement with Jamaica, the OAS assisted Colombia, Panama, and Trinidad and Tobago to develop and implement their national cyber security strategies. The OAS is also working with Dominican and Suriname on a National Cyber Security Plan. In the coming months, this process will also begin in Paraguay and Peru.
