Tokyo-based Coincheck says it’s about $530 million poorer after a hacker stole customers’ cryptocurrency from its coffers. The company says a hacker appeared to have gained unauthorized access to its hot wallet after obtaining the private key used to protect it. The value of XEM Altcoin fell by about 20 percent following the news of the heist, but has since regained its value.
