Jamaican’s sceptical of NIDS after JAMCOVID breach

Loop News Jamaica published an article on February 24, 2021, about the possibility of Jamaicans being hesitant to sign up for NIDS after the JAMCOVID breach. Here’s a summary:

  • Opposition spokesman on science, technology, and commerce, Hugh Graham warns that the JAMCOVID breach which exposed the personal data of thousands of travellers will not inspire confidence in the Government’s upcoming National Identification System (NIDS).
  • Hugh stated that Jamaicans would have every justification to be suspicious of the security of their data associated with NIDS and that the vulnerability is cause for concern causing persons not to sign up to NIDS, especially seeing there was initially a lack of confidence in NIDS.
  • Hugh continued by saying that it’s easy for the Amber Group to classify the data as currently secure but clarification on what caused the breach must be known as well as public assurance that it won’t recur. The Ministry of National Security has insisted the site is now safe and has launched a criminal probe into the matter.
