Jamaicans Cyber Safety

Jamaica Observer published an article on July 19, 2020, about the cyber safety of Jamaicans. Here’s a summary:

  • Computerisation and the Internet are referred to as information and communication technology, which has greatly improved the quality of life and efficiency of businesses.
  • Because of the growing interconnectivity networks have greatly expanded as the number of connected devices has grown to 26.3 billion in 2020. Such a revolutionary change has its downsides which include the security of the information and the use of technology.
  • Cyber security is the practice of defending computers, servers, mobile devices, electronic systems, networks, and data from hacking motivated by greed, technical challenge, and malicious intent.
  • Data breaches have increased by 150% in 2019 and it seems as though no one is trying safe from hacking. This has become a worldwide issue and governments will take action to protect their citizens as well as international cooperation among governments.
  • With such major issues at hand, is Jamaica in a state of readiness to handle such problems and cybersecurity? Are the various forms of communications confidential? Is there a National Cyber Security Strategy implemented? Do we truly have the expertise to handle the threats to our cybersecurity and ways to detect, respond, and recover from cyber incidents? Many concerns and issues can be raised which should not be overlooked as they are critical.
