Jamaica’s biometric collection plans are poised to end data privacy

Jamaica’s draft digital ID bill would require citizens to show their sex assigned at birth. Transgender rights advocate Renae Green fears the bill could “out”” trans Jamaicans who dont identify with their gender identity. The bill is part of a wider range of concerns surrounding the island nations biometric National Identification System (NIDS) The bill heads into a likely vote in Parliament this month. Critics say it falls short of providing clear privacy safeguards and could dissuade certain populations from applying for the ID.”
