The National Identification and Registration Act (NIDS Bill) was passed in the Senate on November 13. The bill was passed with 168 amendments. The system is intended to establish a database of all Jamaican citizens, and will involve the issuance of a unique, lifelong national identification number to every person. The roll-out of the NIDS is slated to begin with a pilot project in January 2019, focusing on civil servants. This is expected to be followed by the national roll- out in September 2019, with a projected duration of three to four years.
