The Electoral Commission of Jamaica (ECJ) denied selling voters data in a public statement responding to the allegations. The ECJ collected approximately $300,000 from two contracts with credit bureaus between 2019 and 2021, according to a report by The Jamaica Gleaner. The agency explained that it provides an extract of its database for digital ID verification. The controversy comes at an awkward time for Jamaica, as it is about to begin issuing National Identification System (NIDS) cards.
