Mavis Batey was a cryptanalyst at Bletchley Park during World War II. She cracked the Italian militarys use of the Enigma encryption machine in the early 1940s. Her MBE was awarded in recognition of her work in preserving and conserving British gardens. Her work gives us a fascinating insight into how cryptanalysts think about deciphering messages in the 1930s. The Allies turned out to be a massive attack against an Allied convoy en route from Egypt to Greece.”]
