Hundreds of dental offices crippled by ransomware attack

Ransomware is a type of virus that locks up a computer and demands a payment for it to be unlocked. Two Wisconsin companies that provide an online service to dentists’ offices say they are working on a case-by-case basis. About 400 practices were initially affected, and about 100 of those have since been restored, a spokeswoman says. The number of publicly reported ransomware infections in the US actually went down in 2018 from 2017, but the number of known attacks against local government institutions went up, suggesting criminal hackers are prioritizing attacks against targets.”]
