China’s Cyberspace Administration of China is rolling out rules to regulate companies that offer algorithm-powered recommendation services. The regulations, expected to go into effect on March 1, apply to both domestic and international companies that operate in mainland China. The aim of the regulation is to preserve national security and public interest, protect the lawful rights and interests of citizens, promote equal development of information services and “carry forward core socialist values,” according to the regulation draft. It also applies to dispatching and decision-making algorithms that are used by transport and delivery services and to generative or synthetic-type algorithms used in gaming and virtual environments.”]
