Hacking Traffic Lights is Amazingly Really Easy

Security researchers at the University of Michigan have hacked traffic light signals in real life. They say it’s shockingly easy to perform by anyone with the right kind of radio and laptop. Researchers say the networked traffic systems are left vulnerable to three major weaknesses: unencrypted radio signals, the use of factory-default usernames and passwords, and a debug port that is easy to attack. More than 40 states currently use traffic light systems to keep traffic flowing as efficiently as possible. The researchers say the vulnerabilities are not a fault of any one device or design choice, but rather a systemic lack of security consciousness.
