The consultation event was led by the National Data Management Authority (NDMA) for the development of a National Cybersecurity Strategy for Guyana.
Key points:
- The event led by the NDMA was in collaboration with the Organization of America States (OAS). They held discussions with representatives of the private sector, justice system, local financial sector, aviation, telecommunications regulators, energy and government agencies responsible for national security.
- Manager of Cybersecurity, Muriana McPherson of the NDMA said that the major risks that remain for cybersecurity of the government agencies either go undetected or reported.
- She added that the NDMA’s mandate is to establish well regulated, secure computing environments and reliable communication linkages among the government agencies.
- Like other countries, Guyana has also faced the challenge of ensuring the adequate mechanisms are in place to handle the increasing prevalence of cybersecurity breaches.
- McPherson outlined a report by the Inter American Development Bank (IDB) and Organization of American States (OAS) that a vast majority of Latin American and Caribbean countries are unprepared to counter cybercrime in the region.
- In response to the highlighted cybersecurity issues, the Government of Guyana formed a technical working group to develop and promote the relevant cybersecurity standards, policies, and guidelines within the ministries and agencies.
