France s National Data Protection Commission (CNIL) has fined Google $57 million ( 50 million) for violations of the General Data Protection Regulation. The French Data Protection Authority (DPA) found a lack of transparency when it comes to how Google harvests and uses personal data for ad-targeting purposes. CNIL determined that Google doesn t obtain valid consent from users to use their data for personalization explicit consent being a key requirement of the GDPR. The fine is the largest yet issued under the EU’s new data privacy law.
