Google Error Causes Widespread Internet Outage in Japan

An error on Google’s part has caused widespread Internet outages in Japan for about an hour, on Friday, August 25. The downtime was caused by a BGP route hijack that began at 12:22 PM local Japan time and was resolved by 1:01 PM. The issue was resolved in under 40 minutes but was enough to cause panic in Japan. A Google spokesperson admitted the company’s blunder in a statement to another local news outlet. NTT Communications Corp., a major ISP who also supports two smaller ISPs named OCN and KDDI Corp.
