Google has stopped testing a Windows 10 memory optimization feature developed by Microsoft after finding it caused a performance hit in Google Chrome. Microsoft introduced an easy way for applications to use Windows 10’s segment heap feature to store data for better memory optimization. Google engineer Bruce Dawson found that segment heaps reduced memory usage by a massive 30%. When enabled, increased CPU utilization causes a 10% decrease in Chrome performance and a 13% increase in “CPU/power consumption”” Google has disabled the use of segment heap in Chrome 85 and is instead putting it behind a flag for later testing.”
