GAO: Equifax-Like Breaches Require Greater Civil Penalties

Government Accountability Office report calls for greater penalties for consumer reporting agencies. Federal Trade Commission should be able to impose greater civil penalties, report says. Equifax data breach led to the ouster of CEO Richard Smith, along with company’s CIO and CSO. The report also comes as the House Committee on Oversight and Reform is conducting hearings about data security at consumer reporting agency. The investigation into what happened at Equifax started on Sept. 7, 2017, when the company issued its first statement about the breach.”]
