Find Your ISP Network Details

TL;DR

Your cable modem/router hides your Internet Service Provider’s (ISP) network settings. This guide shows you how to find them, which is useful for advanced setups like port forwarding or connecting multiple networks.

How to Find Your ISP Network Details

  1. Access Your Router’s Admin Interface
    • Most routers have a web-based admin interface. You’ll need your router’s IP address, username and password.
    • Common router IPs are 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1. Check the bottom of your router for a sticker with this information.
    • If you can’t find it, try these methods:
      • Windows: Open Command Prompt and type ipconfig. Look for ‘Default Gateway’.
      • macOS: Open System Preferences > Network > Select your connection > Advanced > TCP/IP tab. Look for ‘Router’.
    • Open a web browser and enter the router’s IP address in the address bar.
    • You’ll be prompted for a username and password. Common defaults are admin / password, or admin / (blank).
  2. Locate the WAN/Internet Status Page

Once logged in, look for a section called ‘WAN’, ‘Internet’, ‘Status’, or something similar. The exact name varies by router manufacturer.

  3. Identify Key ISP Network Details
    • Public IP Address: This is your unique address on the internet. It’s often displayed prominently.
    • Gateway Address: This is usually your ISP’s router IP address.
      Example: 10.0.0.1
    • DNS Servers: These translate website names into IP addresses. You’ll typically see two DNS server addresses.
      Primary DNS: 8.8.8.8
      Secondary DNS: 8.8.4.4
    • MAC Address (WAN): Your router’s MAC address for the internet connection. This is sometimes needed for registering devices with your ISP.
  4. Check DHCP Settings (Optional)

Some routers show DHCP settings on a separate page. This can confirm the IP address range assigned by your ISP.

  5. Troubleshooting if You Can’t Access Your Router
    • Reset Your Router: As a last resort, you can reset your router to factory defaults (usually a small button on the back). Warning: This will erase all custom settings!
    • Contact Your ISP: If you still have trouble, contact your ISP’s support team for assistance. They can provide your network details and help with login credentials.
