Fewer Breaches in 2018, But More Sensitive Data Spilled

The Identity Theft Resource Center counted 1,244 U.S. breaches in 2018, down 23 percent from 2017. The organization that reported the most number of exposed records was Marriott International. For the whole of 2018, ITRC counted 446.5 million exposed sensitive records, which was an increase of 126 percent. The business sector led by a clear margin, followed by healthcare, financial services, government/military and education, the report says. The top three causes of data breaches: 482 data breaches, 377, 377 million records exposed, including 16 million consumer records.”]
