Feds Say ‘Adios’ to Admin Rights on Windows

Federal Desktop Core Configuration (FDCC) directive takes effect on February 1. FDCC is new set of standard security configuration guidelines for all federal agencies that run or plan to run Windows XP and Vista desktops or laptops. Contractors’ Windows client machines that run on federal networks also fall under FDCC. The biggest change with the directive will be limiting client machines to basic user privileges rather than letting them run with administrative rights. Security experts say they expect the feds to eventually set standard secure configurations for servers and other devices as well.”]
