FCC: Rip and replace Huawei, ZTE gear from their networks to enhance national security will cost $1.8 billion. FCC designated Huawei and ZTE as threats to U.S. national security because they could exploit vulnerabilities in America’s telecom networks to spy on communications on behalf of the Chinese government. FCC chairman Ajit Pai urged Congress to appropriate funding for smaller telecom firms. Finding a cost-effective replacement for Chinese gear is proving challenging as carriers prepare for 5G rollouts in Europe and elsewhere.
