Fake Instagram Account – What to do

TL;DR

Someone created an Instagram account using your email address without your permission. It hasn’t been verified but has over 1000 followers. This guide explains how to report it to Instagram and take steps to protect your account.

Reporting the Account to Instagram

  1. Find the Fake Account: Search for the account on Instagram using the email address associated with it.
  2. Report the Account:
    • Go to the fake account’s profile page.
    • Tap the three dots (menu icon) in the top right corner.
    • Select “Report”.
    • Choose “It’s pretending to be someone else” or “Impersonation”. If it’s clearly a bot, you can also choose ‘Spam’.
    • Follow Instagram’s on-screen instructions. You will likely need to provide details about why the account is fake (e.g., using your email without permission).
  3. Report Multiple Times: Encourage friends and family who see the account to also report it. The more reports, the faster Instagram may take action.

Protecting Your Real Instagram Account

  1. Check Associated Emails: Review your email inbox for any suspicious activity related to Instagram.
    • Look for emails about new account creation, password resets, or login attempts you didn’t make.
  2. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): This adds an extra layer of security to your account.
    • Go to your Instagram profile.
    • Tap the menu icon (three lines) in the top right corner.
    • Select “Settings and privacy”.
    • Select “Account Security”.
    • Choose “Two-Factor Authentication” and follow the instructions. You can use an authentication app or SMS text message.
  3. Review Connected Apps: Check which third-party apps have access to your Instagram account.
    • Go to “Settings and privacy” > “Account Security”.
    • Select “Apps and websites”.
    • Remove any apps you don’t recognize or no longer use.
  4. Change Your Password: If you suspect your password has been compromised, change it immediately.
    • Go to “Settings and privacy” > “Account Security”.
    • Select “Password”.
    • Enter a strong, unique password.

Contacting Instagram Support (If Needed)

  1. Help Center: Visit the Instagram Help Center for more information and support options.
  2. Direct Message: While direct messaging isn’t always effective, you can try contacting Instagram Support through their official accounts (be wary of fake support accounts).

What if the Account Remains Active?

If Instagram doesn’t remove the account after reporting it multiple times, consider these options:
