Failure to encrypt portable devices inexcusable, say analysts

BP has disclosed a data compromise involving a lost laptop containing personal data on 13,000 people. About 30 of the 144 data breaches announced so far this year involved portable devices. Analysts say encryption is one of the few slam-dunks in security for companies of reasonable size. The growing cost of data breaches in particular should be pushing companies to adopt portable encryption more aggressively, say analysts. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs issued a memorandum requiring all agencies to encrypt sensitive data on portable devices in 2006.”]
