EPA breach involved program widely supported by contractors

An email attachment containing a virus was opened from a computer with access to the data housed on the servers, an EPA employee says. Social Security numbers, bank-routing numbers and home addresses were exposed. The compromised servers house data from the Superfund program, established to address abandoned hazardous waste sites and implement cleanup plans. EPA management did not say whether the compromised computer belonged to a contractor or a federal employee. The agency is “using discretion in releasing information related to this situation,” an EPA official says.”]
