EFF Hopeful Car Hacking Demo Could Help Yield DMCA Exemption

The Digital Millennium Copyright Act has been used in many cases to threaten security researchers and prevent research from being published. The EFF is seeking an exemption from the law for legitimate security research on vehicles. A final rule is due in the autumn and the exemption is due to be approved by the end of the year. Researchers Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek demonstrated an exploit against a vulnerability in the Uconnect computer in some Jeep vehicles. They showed that they could exploit the bug remotely and eventually take control of some of the vehicle s key systems, including transmission and other controls.
