- The benefits were discussed during a virtual expert group meeting (EGM) hosted by ECLAC Caribbean on July 15, 2020.
- The EGM was based on the upcoming study that reviews the data protection legislation of specific Caribbean countries to assess their alignment with the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and international best practices for data sharing.
- The study will make targeted recommendations for the revision of existing or adopting legislation in compliance with regional and international standards and protection of privacy.
- ECLAC Caribbean Director, Diane Quarless, stated that providing a level of data protection for personal data abiding under the GDPR can ensure a continuous flow of information to and from the Caribbean with significant economic value for countries in the subregion.
- The ECLAC study will also make recommendations on facilitating the cross-border transfer of data, balancing freedom of expression with privacy rights, among other things.
- Representatives of government ministries, departments, and supervisory authorities responsible for data protection, information sharing, and e-government from participating countries Antigua and Barbuda,
- The Bahamas, Belize, and other countries along with representatives of the Caribbean and EU organization with data protection and e-government mandates.
