The average cost of a breach declined by 24%, from $7.2 million in 2010 to $5.5 million in 2011. Researchers saw a 10% decrease in the per capita cost of breaches, which includes the cost of investigating breaches. Malicious insider attacks were the leading cause of data breaches in 2011, the Ponemon Institute study found.
