Data Breach Costs Drop

The average cost of a breach declined by 24%, from $7.2 million in 2010 to $5.5 million in 2011. Researchers saw a 10% decrease in the per capita cost of breaches, which includes the cost of investigating breaches. Malicious insider attacks were the leading cause of data breaches in 2011, the Ponemon Institute study found. Breach costs went up when the data was exposed by a third party or a lost or stolen device, the study said. The study examined the 2011 data breach experiences of 49 U.S.-based organizations.”]
