Haititechnews published an article on August 9, 2017, titled “Cyber security expert warns: Caribbean could be losing millions”.
The CEO of Caribbean Cyber Security Centre (CCSC) reveals the Caribbean’s fast-growing cybersecurity issues as he voices several concerns to both private organizations and governments.
Key points:
- James Bynoe, CEO of Caribbean Cyber Security Centre (CCSC) reveals cybercrime becoming a threat to the safety and economic development of countries as he reports that within the 12 months there have been multiple instances across the region breaches and cyber-crime. He warns urges private and government institutions to beware as reports from leading global security organizations indicate a rise in cyber-crime since 2013.
- Bynoe states that cybercriminals steal thousands in revenue from businesses and individuals and that the Caribbean could be losing millions via unsecured and unprotected work and home computers.
- He expressed concerns that telecommunications companies seeking to expand internet access despite low levels of regional cybersecurity defenses would provide cyber-criminals with more potential victims. Couple with the fact that there are insufficient organizations with resources to assist to combat cyber-crime, the CCSC CEO felt it necessary to advise the prime minister to make combatting cybercrime a national priority.
- Bynoe expressed the need for cyber laws and legislation in the Caribbean to play a key role in aiding the fight against cybercrime in the region. He also called for private sectors to play a more socially responsible role in helping educate the masses on the cyber threat.
- Both public and private sectors can no longer afford to dismiss budgeting for cybersecurity defenses within their organizations. As the Caribbean is now among one of the fastest-growing Internet penetration regions in the world.
