Cyber threats are as dangerous as COVID-19

NewsDay published an article on August 2, 2020, about cyber threats being as dangerous as COVID-19. Here’s a summary:

  • Governor of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank Timothy Antoine said more regional and international partnerships between governments and private sector institutions were critical in developing cyber resilience and risk management against online attacks. He stated that just like the coronavirus, cyber-attacks have the potential to spread rapidly and damage global economies if necessary, measures aren’t taken.
  • The high rate of contagion of cyber viruses means a cyber virus can engulf the world and spread faster than a biological virus. Just as the governments have given a unified response to the pandemic, they should be just as focused on building their defences against possible cyber-attacks.
  • Cybersecurity expert for CARICOM IMPACS Dale Joseph noted that while organizations were responsible for drafting policies, the public should also be aware and take measures against becoming victims of cybercrimes by simple practices like regularly changing their passwords and updating software on their laptops.
