The Jamaica Observer published an online article on May 15, 2018, about C’bean urging to strengthen cybersecurity.
The European Union passed new legislation to protect the information of EU citizens and businesses. Organizations that fail to follow this new law will be liable for any information lost in the event of an attack.
Key points:
- Caribbean countries are being urged to strengthen their cybersecurity with the introduction of the General Data Protection Regulation cybersecurity legislation from the European Union.
- Under this legislation, it is mandatory for any entity to adequately protect the information of any EU citizen or business.
- A fine of up to 4% of the organization’s global turnover or up to Euro 20 million will be imposed on the organization who fail to comply with the new law.
- Leacock advised businesses in Barbados that do business with European businesses or citizens to ensure that they comply with this new law.
- The CICCD has partnered with the island’s Data Processing Department, the Telecommunications Unit, The Barbados Defence Force and the BIDC to aid awareness on cyber risks.
