On July 1st, 2016, the cybercrime experts within the Commonwealth Secretariat published an article regarding the need for robust cybersecurity within the Commonwealth. Below is a quick summary of the key takeaways:
During a National Cybercrime and Cyber Security Awareness workshop in Barbados, the Commonwealth Secretariat delivered crucial advice to various cybersecurity specialists regarding cybersecurity. This was a part of the Commonwealth Cybercrime Initiative.
As the cost of cybercrime climbs, so too does the need for a high degree of skill, high-quality equipment, and extensive training in cybersecurity and law enforcement. “If nothing is done the cost could run into trillions,” said Shadrach Haruna, Legal Adviser at the Commonwealth Secretariat.
The Commonwealth’s expert also suggested the following:
- All Commonwealth countries should adopt and disseminate national cybersecurity strategies.
- Develop capacities within law enforcement and other critical sectors.
- The creation of a national committee on cybersecurity.
- A cybersecurity awareness campaign, targeting diverse stakeholders.
These workshops created a sharp focus on the main issues. The audience was educated on how to stay a step ahead of cybercrime. These sessions were also accompanied by presentations to the cabinet as a political association is key to making progress.
