Congress to Consider Competing COVID-19 Privacy Bills

Democrats and Republicans introduce privacy legislation aimed at protecting consumer data collected during public health emergencies. Democrats’ Public Health Emergency Privacy Act would set strong and enforceable privacy and data security rights for health information collected during emergencies. Republicans proposal would hold businesses accountable to consumers if they use personal data to fight the COVID-19 pandemic. Republicans’ proposal would: Require companies under the jurisdiction of the Federal Trade Commission to obtain affirmative express consent from individuals to collect, process, or transfer their personal health, geolocation or transfer.”]
