China Piracy Crackdown Shutters 76 Websites

The Chinese government has shuttered 76 Websites for providing downloadable movies, music, and more copyrighted or otherwise protected content. 18 people were also arrested, and 29 Website operators were fined a total of roughly $98,000. The move represents the first major government crackdown on Internet piracy in China. The U.S. film, publishing, record and software industries claim they lost some $2.4 billion due to piracy in 2005. Only ten percent of the software used in China is legitimate, according to researcher IDC and Business Software Alliance.”]
