China Orders Apple to Monitor App Store Users and Track their Identities

The Chinese government has imposed new regulation on distributors of mobile apps that requires both app stores and app developers keep a close eye on users and maintain a record of their activities for at least 60 days. Providers are forbidden from collecting user’s location data and reading their contacts stealthily. Developers must verify users’ identities by requiring their mobile numbers or other information. The draft regulation has already been submitted to China’s top legislature. If passed, the law will threaten the privacy of hundreds of Millions of Internet users in China and increase the government’s control over the Web.
