The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) published a case study presented by the Manager of Aviation Security & Facilitation, Althea C. Bartley of the Jamaican Civil Aviation Authority (JCAA) on December 13th, 2018 about Cybersecurity in Aviation.
The case study was presented at a workshop hosted by the JCAA in association with the ICAO. Althea Bartley of the JCAA said that the development of the workshop came from the need to increase awareness of cybersecurity threats within the aviation industry.

- The study presented was based on an increase in numerous incidents that occurred over the last years.
- As Aviation is a critical infrastructure for governments and countries, the workshop worked for bringing guidance to the relevant stakeholders on emerging cybersecurity threats and their specific remedial techniques.
- ICT in the air transport sector is currently relied on heavily to provide access to travel information, book flights, verify tickets, and offer internet connectivity services for airport customers.
- The availability of these systems is key to the continuation of smooth work and thus it is important to mitigate the threats that violate their state of integrity.
- Sessions presented by the JCAA took different perspectives as listed: Safeguarding Nation Critical Infrastructure – Air Transport ICT Perspective, Border Security Perspective, and National Response.
- Ms. Bartley further stated that within aviation, cybersecurity would not just be needed for airports and airline services but also civil aviation authorities and air navigation systems.
