DPI Guyana published an article on October 19th, 2017, about Internet Week Guyana advancing the Caribbean tech development agenda.
The Government of Guyana in recent collaborations with The Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU) and Caribbean Network Operators Group (CaribNOG) and other Internet organizations hosted the inaugural Internet Week Guyana.
Key points:
- The Internet Week Guyana was a five-day conference focused on building human resource capacity in cybersecurity along with a few other technology-related areas.
- The event saw a turn-out of more than 400 participants, including public and private sector officials, telecommunications and computer networking specialists, and entrepreneurs.
- International collaborators of the CTU, CaribNOG, Internet Society, Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN), and the Latin America and Caribbean Internet Addresses Registry (LACNIC) were all present to introductory details to tertiary level students on the topics.
- Caribbean Outreach Manager at ARIN, Bevil Wooding along with co-organizers of the event said, “Private sector leaders, law enforcement and judicial officers, academia and civil society all have a collective responsibility to ensure that citizens and businesses and governments are safer and more secure in the digital age”
- Head of Strategic Relations and Integration at LACNIC, Kevon Swift spoke on encouraging Caribbean governments to develop legislative agendas and increasing intra-regional cooperation to strengthen the region’s overall cybersecurity capability.
- “The CTU continues to support the development of information and Communication Technologies sector in the region with an emphasis on harnessing the potential of the youth”, said Michelle Garcia, Communications Specialist at the CTU.
- The later developments after this event are where the real work continues for the mentioned initiatives to be a national benefit.
