Fraudsters use stolen card details obtained in retail breaches to fool payments processors into approving fraudulent card transactions before they are sent to the issuer. Processors may handle transactions for hundreds or thousands of institutions, making them prime targets for criminals. Fraudsters feigning to be the legitimate cardholder ask the payments processor to approve a card transaction that might get flagged, either because it’s out of the country, over a specific dollar amount, or because the card has not been used in a while or not used for a certain type of transaction.
