The latest updates for Windows 10 version 1809 and Windows Server 2019 could prevent Internet Explorer 11 from launching if there is no default search provider or a malformed one is configured for the browser. Internet Explorer uses the Windows Registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER_USERSOFTWAREMicrosoftInternet ExplorerSearchScopes. When users are affected by this bug, the browser will briefly start and then automatically close. To resolve this issue, users will need to launch Internet Explorer with an URL as an argument in order to get Internet Explorer launched again. Once properly launched, the user can then go into the Internet Explorer settings to configure a new search provider.
