Bitlocker Recovery: Save Key to Microsoft Account

TL;DR

Save your Bitlocker recovery key to your Microsoft account so you don’t need a USB drive. This makes it easier to unlock your laptop if something goes wrong.

How to Save Your Bitlocker Recovery Key

  1. Check Bitlocker is Enabled: First, make sure Bitlocker is actually turned on for your drive.
  • Access Bitlocker Recovery Options: There are a few ways to get to the recovery options.
    • From Control Panel: In the control bitlocker window, click ‘Manage Bitlocker’ next to the drive you want to protect.
    • From File Explorer: Right-click on the encrypted drive in File Explorer and select ‘Manage Bitlocker’.
  • Save Recovery Key Online: Once you’re in the Manage Bitlocker window:
    • Click ‘Back up recovery key’.
    • Choose ‘Save to your Microsoft account’.
    • You’ll be prompted to sign in with your Microsoft account (the same one used for Windows).
    • Follow the on-screen instructions. It will confirm where the key is saved.
  • Verify Key Saved: It’s important to check it worked!
  • What if I change my Microsoft Account Password?

Changing your password doesn’t affect the saved recovery keys. They are linked to your account, not a specific password.

What if I have already backed up to a USB drive?

    1. You can still save it to your Microsoft Account as an extra backup. It’s always good to have multiple copies!
    2. Follow the steps above, even if you’ve already saved it elsewhere.
