Bermuda’s Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA)

The Bermudan government published an update on the country’s Personal Information Protection Act 2016 (PIPA). Below are some key highlights:

  • The Personal Information Protection Act 2016 (PIPA) outlines the requirements for organisations that use personal information, as well as the rights that individuals have regarding the use of their personal information by organisations
  • While organisations require the use of personal information to provide services, it is important that individuals have control over their information and how it is used and shared
  • The PIPA will not come into full force before the end of 2021, in order that organisations have time to prepare for its implementation.
  • The Privacy Commissioner will assist in providing information and education to both organisations and the public.
