Minister of Innovation, Science and Smart Technology spoke on Barbados’ first step towards a more digital safe space by announcing that the Data Protective Legislation has been passed.
Key points:
- Senator Kay McConney, Minister of Innovation, Science and Smart Technology asserted emphasis on the needed for cybersecurity as the Government, small and medium-sized businesses are set on a radical transition into the online sphere. Her address came at a virtual forum held by her ministry.
- She highlighted the fact that half of the global population is online, there is a need for increased cyber-protection. Furthermore, as digitization takes place in countries across the world, e-governance security measures and national cyber-security policies that provide the right legislative framework to ensure a resilient IT infrastructure and services is imperative.
- McConney stated that “Cybersecurity is one of the focus areas for Barbados. We are acutely aware of the work that still has to be done if we, like other Caribbean countries, are to improve our readiness and resources.”
- McConney noted that Government intent for the undertaking was to both improve Barbados’ position globally and their cybersecurity efforts in taking care of citizens and ensuring that their data is protected.
- McConney proudly announced that the current administration was able to pass data protective legislation, an important step in the regulation of collecting, storage, dissemination of personal data and the protection of the privacy of individuals concerning their data.
