Bahamas Information Services Updates published an article on April 26, 2014, about New Cyber Security Strategy to strengthen data protection capabilities.
The Government of The Bahamas has embarked upon the development of a National Cyber Security Strategy that will further strengthen the country’s data protection capabilities by strengthening cybercrime legislation in The Bahamas.
Key points:
- Implementation of the Strategy will result in the establishment of a National Computer Security Cyber Incident Response Team (CSIRT). A National Cyber Security Working Group will be appointed to facilitate the development of the National Cybersecurity Strategy in consultation with stakeholder groups.
- Preventative and/or protective measures will be put in place to guard against activities that target computers and those criminal activities that are facilitated by computer networks or devices to target others.
- The Minister of National Security, Dr. the Hon. Bernard “BJ” Nottage, made note that with the dangers that individuals are coming to face with this era being highly sustained by the advent of technology and the internet. He highlighted this fact due to the reality of that a great reliance has been placed upon the internet to be the bridge that connects us and the vault to store sensitive information.
- Addressing the Workshop for the Development of a National Cyber Strategy at the Paul H. Farquharson Conference Centre, Dr. Nottage said virtually all critical sectors of society rely on information and communication networks for their stable functioning. He went on to further discuss the need for such a critical place to be safe and secure.
- A new joint study conducted by global market intelligence firm IDC and the National University of Singapore (NUS) concluded that the amount of money expected to be spent on malware, security vulnerabilities and data breaches would lead into the billions. From this study, the cost of underestimating cyber threats was highlighted greatly, as such large financial backlashes on governments and business can be crippling.
- The National Security Minister noted that the issue of cyber-crime and how the Criminal Justice System deals with it, are becoming more and more important given the “rise in the use” of the Internet and the country’s “increasing reliance on systems which are vulnerable to new forms of attack.”
