Android Rootikit To Be Shown at DefCon

Researchers have developed a kernel-level Android rootkit in the form of a loadable kernel module and will demonstrate the proof of concept exploit at the upcoming DefCon conference. Researchers used AT commands to rewrite device firmware, bypass Android security mechanisms, exfiltrate sensitive device information, and unlock screens. A U.S. senator is giving the four telecommunications companies until Sept. 4 to outline how they plan to better protect customer data privacy. Researchers lack confidence in organizations’ defenses against looming Russian cyberattacks, report says.
