Android Kitkat Audio Fix (HTTPS)

TL;DR

Audio isn’t playing on your LG G Pro 2 running Android 4.4.2 when using HTTPS? This is often due to SSL certificate issues or outdated audio codecs. Here’s how to fix it.

Solution Guide

  1. Check Your SSL Certificate
    • HTTPS requires a valid SSL certificate. An expired, invalid, or self-signed certificate can cause audio playback problems.
    • Use an online SSL checker tool (like SSL Shopper) to verify your website’s certificate is valid and correctly configured.
    • If the certificate is invalid, renew it or ensure it’s properly installed on your server.
  2. Clear Browser Cache & Cookies
    • Corrupted cache files can interfere with audio playback.
    • Open Chrome (or your default browser) on your Android device.
    • Go to Settings > Privacy > Clear browsing data.
    • Select Cached images and files, Cookies and site data, and tap Clear data.
  3. Update Chrome (or your Browser)
    • Older browser versions may have compatibility issues with newer audio codecs or HTTPS protocols.
    • Open the Google Play Store.
    • Search for Chrome and tap Update if available.
  4. Check Audio Codec Support
    • Android Kitkat supports common audio codecs like MP3, AAC, Ogg Vorbis, but may have issues with newer formats.
    • Try playing different audio file types (e.g., MP3 vs. WAV) to see if the problem is codec-specific.
    • If a specific format isn’t working, consider converting it to a more widely supported one like MP3 using an online converter or software on your computer.
  5. Disable Hardware Acceleration in Chrome
    • Hardware acceleration can sometimes cause conflicts with audio playback.
    • Open Chrome settings: Settings > Advanced > System.
    • Toggle Use hardware acceleration when available to the off position.
    • Restart Chrome.
  6. Check Permissions (Rare)
    • Although uncommon, ensure your browser has permission to access storage if audio files are stored locally.
    • Go to Settings > Apps > Chrome > Permissions.
    • Verify that Storage is enabled.
  7. Reset App Preferences (Last Resort)
    • This will reset all app preferences, including default apps and background restrictions. Be aware this may require you to reconfigure some settings.
    • Go to Settings > Apps > Menu (three dots) > Reset app preferences.
    • Confirm the reset.
